I need casting help!!!
I want to start making custom weapons but I have no idea what to do. If anyone (That means you Wuzzupbob and clonefactory ! ) has any information on how to do this and what materials I need, help would be greatly appriceated(sp?). Pics would be great too.

I'm no wiz at this stuff but, i think that you need a mould and then you pour something in it and wait for it to harden? (Just a guess )

Re: I need casting help!!!
If you're just going to cast for yourself; it would be cheaper just to buy from a supplier like TLAS or brickarms than to buy a casting kit.

Re: I need casting help!!!
Plastic injection is by far the best way to go... that's how lego does it, that's how thelittlearmsshop does it, that's how brickarms does it, and that's how brickforge does it. The only problem with that is that it's expensive ($3K a mold or more). Otherwise you can do it how I, Kaminoan, Clonefactory, or Arealight do it by 2 part resin castings (much cheaper but not as neat/clean).
Re: I need casting help!!!
I need it to be as cheap as possible.
But I want it to still look good.

Now, wait a minute; Wuzzupbob and clonefactory only casts helmets to my knowledge, and helmets are the easiest things to cast. If you're looking for casting weapons, I don't think you can achieve that very well with resin cast(the cheapest). I suggest you just buy weapons from BrickForge, Little Arms Shop and Brickarms if you're looking for top-notch gear.

Re: I need casting help!!!
It seems to me that helmets would be the hardest to cast because of their shape. Weapons should be easier because they are solid and dont have a space in the middle that has to be filled.

Re: I need casting help!!!
Believe me, weapons are much harder to cast. If you don't believe me please try it for yourself.

Re: I need casting help!!!
RecluseMage at MCN has posted a guide to casting helmets. Right now the site is down for maintenance, but I suggest you check it out in a few days.

Ok, Mage's tutorial was cool but I still want to know what materials I need and how to pour the material into the new mold.

Re: I need casting help!!!
You'll need resin, and the silicone mold mentioned in RecluseMage's article. Everything should be in the guide.

Re: I need casting help!!!
Lots of questions and answers flying around. I will try and help all that I can. I owe this community that at least.
Weapons are defineatly harder to mold usually because of the details that run horizontal vs vertical. i.e. the gun handle vs. the barrel. This creates areas where air is trapped easier.
The brand that I prefer is alumilite type 2. Although I started with and would suggest the alumilite Starter kit. It comes with all you need to make a first mold and and start to cast.
Caution right now. This is not a clean hobby. Have newsprint or I prefer square napkins on hand. lots of them.
I have to say however that this is not a cheap or easy venture. Sometimes I am positive that science has nothing to do with it and luck is all you need.
I just started to cast the new Clone Wars blasters in black and for a seasoned rookie I still find this hard i.e getting a clean cast.
Wuzzupbob may add some info or scoff at some of these ideas but.
Casting a Weapon 101
In order to position the weapon in the mold I first crazy glued the butt end of the blaster to a lego antennae.
The weapon is positioned vertically.
While the glue is drying make a box out of lego. For the blaster approximatley 8 x 10-12. You have to find a way to suspend the antennae in the box so that there is a sepaeration between the blaster and the bottom of the box at least 1.5-2 squares. Also ensure that there is another seperation between the top of the blaster and the top of the box (3-4 squares)
While the blaster is suspended in the box mix your mold agents following directions.
Pour the agent into the box making sure there is room at the top of the box.
Once you have covered the blaster/gun plus a little more tip the box slowly side to side to get rid of bubbles. Use a needle to pop bubbles that are not breaking. You have about 20-30 minutes to do this before the agent starts to set (If the agent was mixed right).
Let it sit at least over night preferably a day until it is hard.
I will do the casting process next time. Any questions?
