StuG III Major WIP
I'm currently working on yet another WWII tank, yet this time nazi. It'll be the StuG III and I'm basing it mainly of pictures from Brickmania and Aaron Morse. So far I have the tread system covered, and need to work out some minor flaws, then I can build the top layer and begin greebling. I have a very very major WIP pic right now:
Yeah, not much. And I know I've mixed greys, remember, WIP!
Tips are appreciated!

Re: StuG III Major WIP
Actually, I think the mixed grays would be good to make the tank seem like it's weathered down.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
When I clicked on this, I said "Oh cool, a STuG!" but when I saw that it was only half finished tread system...I was sad.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
@Teeb: Like I said on Flickr, the greebs are usually the things I work on last. First I want to finish the overall shape.
@Anomanzer: Yeah, I guess your right, but I'd prefer it to be a shiney new tank
@Pizza: Yeah, I know, hence the 'Major'. I'm working on the other half right now though and hope to get the lower part done by tonight.

Cool, I plan on making a PIV or PIVist tank for my German faction.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
UPDATE! I've completed the bottom half. Well, kinda. The first stage anyway.
Here we see the daring half finished StuG III taking on the Mount Bley Bricks.

Re: StuG III Major WIP
Finally... now just don't use 2x2 slopes like almost every other WWII tank.

Woah! That's way cool! I hope to see more soon! But StuGs aren't tanks, they're Assault Guns, I think.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
@ Rob: Tank hunters, to be precise. They aren't tanks 'cos they don't have a rotating turret.

No, Tank Destroyers to be precise.
And it would be impossible NOT to use slopes for a stug...just look at it.

Re: StuG III Major WIP
Now you've got me confused. I thought the Marder was a tank destroyer.
EDIT: Oh, no, I get it now. The Jadgpanzer panzerjager, in example, was a tank destroyer, but the Marder is a tank hunter.

Tank hunters/tank destroyers? Don't they both do the same thing (take out tanks)?

No, they're completely different.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
Not really... based on the name, their purpose is to destroy tanks.

Well, it would be helpfull if you could enlighten me as to why they are different. I don't feel like spending 15 minutes getting distracted on wikipedia.

Tank destroyers and hunters aren't tank fighters, if they go head to head against tanks, they will lose. Destroyers hunt in packs, picking on tanks one at a time, while hunters mainly work alone, maneuver behind a tank column and fire then run away, rinse and repeat. Although allied tank destroyers and hunters were more effective, they were faster, had better guns, etc. And they worked well against the lumbering slow Tigers, Panthers and King Tigers.

Looking great PhiMa! May I suggest putting that front lower armor a bit more backwards?

Thanks, but no can do. If I were to lower it, It'd show some of the technic axels. I could maybe lenthen it though...

I think making it a tad longer, Or greebling the technique axle and letting it show..?

Re: StuG III Major WIP
Update! I've got the turret basically done, now come the greebles, hatch, and back area.
Re: StuG III Major WIP
It's nice, but the gun and supports are kinda fail.

First, make the part which actually holds the gun more blocky.
Then, redo the entire barrel. Make it longer. First attach a 1x1 round plate, then a 1x1 round brick, a rod on op of that, then some of these over the rod, and then either a 1x1 cone or brick, whatever looks best.
And then put one of those robot hands on a jumper plate right under the gun.
And it needs more wheels. A lot more wheels. Also different sizes.

Re: StuG III Major WIP
In regards to the beginning conversation: Yeah, it'd be impossible to not use slopes, but not impossible to not use 2x2s. In fact, I think you'd need VERY few 2x2 slopes. 1x3s, 2x4's are going to make up the entirety of this thing, I believe. The STuG has much more gradual sloping, 2x2's would only be useful at maybe the very top of the vehicle, before it levels out and begins sloping down.
As to this new WIP... it's not right. It's not supposed to be perfectly flat in the front of the gun, nor is it along the sides. It's sloping very gently. This is turning out to be too chunky .
