CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
The Age of Light!
Year 3rd Annual WIP Extravaganza!
Year 3rd Annual WIP Extravaganza!
Ah yes "Legends of the Fall" has returned. This project officially started August 15, 2011. Ok so I'm slaving away for about 150 to 250 hours again over the next 3-4 months. This is my annual MEGA CABG SHIP community build. “Community Build!?”, you ask! Well there's several ways to support me in this project. Now to until the end of September post a "Lightside" version of your SigFig in this thread with your SigFig’s bio info.
Note: Tan, white, and gray peices are preferred as primary colors but are not required. (No black torsos or legs.) Also remember to try to keep your pieces as purist as posible I don't make custom minifigures nor would I have the time if I did while building a massive SHIP.

Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
A new massive ship from you, NICE!
If you still have that sigfig of mine intact, just put the head + grass on a Jedi outfit and add a orange lightsaber.

Ok I'll get my siggy up soon. I am very excited to see what you are going to build Rook!
Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
Whoa. I just realized I don't have an official sig fig besides a clone trooper in my series.
I'll get on it!

Wow, I can't wait to see how this ship will turn out, so here is my light-side sigfig.
Ivan Treoluas or Vulcan as he was called, was the commander of one of NOVA's Marine Corps. He is from the planet New Cogadh, the main military planet for NOVA. War and leadership is in his blood, it has been in his family for generations, even before the colonization of New Ovaron, one of his ancestors actually helped form NOVA during the colonization period.

Well, this is actually my apoc sigfig, but he works as a SW dude too. No bio, 'cause that would be apoc. Don't do the cut off backpack thing, just give him the normal backpack.

1st Update
The majority of the fuselage frame is built. I’m trying to actually make this ship “portable”. Depending on how I feel about it, I might try to keep it intact for Brickfete 2012.
1st major challenge was coming up with a stable and playable circular fuselage.
2nd major challenge is going to be creating "landing gear". I've found that with ships this big making functional landing gear is nearly impossible because of the shear weight. So I'm trying to come up with a design that is functional or appears to be functional.
Above SIGFIG images saved.
Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
Ooh. Landing gear. That sounds from the way you described it going to be tricky. MAybe try using thick landing gear made from bricks instead of Technic. That might make it sturdier.
Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
My light-side sigfig; Wicked
Bio: Wicked's respiratory system was damaged badly after inhaling too much grit and dust during the battle of Geonosis. He now needs a re-breather to allow him to inhale enough oxygen to survive. His shoulders sport standard issue clone armour to protect from stray blaster bolts. He was trained as a Sith, but decided to covert to a jedi after the Sith went into hiding. He did so not because he thought what the Sith did was wrong, but because of his lust for war. The Clone wars filled that craving.
If we need a parts list, I don't mind making one.

Yeah brick built is not a problem. The hard part about movement in large MOCs is using only Lego pieces, something that even Legoland avoids. Anyone with enough money could just build a robot and slap Lego over it and be done. Building the robot out of Lego and then making it move is hard. Look at Mind Storm builders, all they do is build for function. If they do much of any decorative work to a MOC it quickly becomes too heavy. So the key is to build landing gear that isn't affected by the weight it supports. Thus lateral movement is the easiest option. But I'm always looking for a challenge. So I sketch on!

I think Mark Kelso might be of some help to you. Even if he can't you might get a few ideas on how to solve your problem.
Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
Which is Mark Kelso?
The football player, the drummer, or the Lego guy?
I don't believe any of his "SHIPS" have functional landing gear for the same reason none of mine have either.

The drummer. Lol
I thought some of his did... oh well I am trying to think of another ship builder who does landing gear...
Re: CABG Community Event: The Age of Light WIP
I haven’t seen any on any thing functional ones on any SHIPS over about 150 studs long.
Maybe this is a numbers game. Make it a centipod.
See here's a crane boom.
I’d need at least 4 of these to lift about 10-15 pounds each by thrust alone and to do it all at the same time. Any delay and the amount of weight would shift to 20-40 pounds per pod. And this little boom is barely designed to lift its own weight.

I think I know who could help you.
He has done retractable landing gear.
But I don't know his name.
FUDGE!

I'm building a ship, not computer software.

Update 2
I've finished up some more support beams. A little slow, hopefully the weekend will present a few extra hours.
Without giving away too much here's the basic shape:
Nose (Command), Main Bay (Equipment), Secondary Bay (Living areas), Conduit to Tail (Maintenance), Tail (Classified)
